What are Emotional Release Techniques?
ERTs are techniques that give
people relief from stress caused by automatic emotional
reactions – reactions that we are not even aware we are
doing! These automatic reactions are learned behaviors,
or conditioned responses, which were somehow acquired earlier in
life. Because they are “automatic” they can and do occur outside
of your awareness – you know you feel bad, you just don’t know
exactly why. And if you don’t know why, you cannot change it.
This can be extremely frustrating – almost as if you have no
control!
But wait - you CAN regain control! You CAN un-learn these
unhealthy behaviors – so you are free to learn healthier ones.
There are many different ERTs, called by many different names.
The one thing they all have in common is that they help you
become free of unhealthy behaviors.
Why the separate name, “ERT”?
Rather than it being a separate technique, “ERT” is a collective term
referring to any technique whose goal is to
release suppressed emotions. Over the years, in the field of
emotional healing, various emotional healing techniques have
been developed, have evolved and grown, as practitioners evolve
and grow. No system is static. Having a generic name, such as
“Emotional Release Technique,” gives practitioners of emotional
healing the freedom to grow, outside the confines of a named
technique.
